About Us
The “Tangerine” is the campus-based student run newspaper, which provides a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved and start building their portfolios and resumes. The “Tangerine” allows students to publish stories, which increases their marketability to potential employers. Students who join the “Tangerine” staff have the chance to work as reporters, photographers, editors, layout designers, Web designers and advertising representatives. Students do not have to be a journalism major to join. We welcome everyone with open arms.
The “Tangerine” comes out weekly, on Thursday afternoons and can be found throughout campus in orange “Tangerine” wooden boxes. The Tangerine staff also holds meetings every Monday at 3:30 p.m. in room 106, Hubbard Hall. Students can even take ‘Tangerine Practicum,’ a one-credit class, up to four times for credit. If students choose to do this, they are usually asked to write one story each week and are expected to comply with weekly deadlines. This is not a requirement, however; students who just want to write for the paper for fun and the experience can do so as well, and will not have to be stressed by deadlines.
The “Tangerine” has been a Utica College organization for years and has actually gone through a couple of name changes. When the paper first started on November 6, 1946 it was called the “Utica College News” and had a 50 person staff. John Tallmadge, a member of the English Department, was the first adviser. One month after the paper began, the name changed to “The Oracle.” At the time the sports teams here at UC were named The Tangerines, after the Syracuse Orange. In the 1952-1953 school year, Ralph Strebel renamed the UC teams the Pioneers. It was at this time when the student newspaper, “The Oracle,” took the name and became known as the “Tangerine.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of articles does the “Tangerine” cover?
The Tangerine covers just about anything. It largely focuses on campus news and events, but also prints world news, sports (UC and professional), opinions and editorials, and any kind of entrainment pieces.

Can anybody work for the paper?
Absolutely!

How do we get in contact with the “Tangerine”?
You can call us, but staff members are not always in the office. The best day to call Wednesday, but you can leave us a voicemail and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Also we frequently check our e-mail, tangerineuc@yahoo.com, so that is probably the easiest way to contact us. You can also go onto our Web site and post a message by going to the letter to the editor link.

Where is the office?
The office is located on the second floor in Strebel, room 202 across from Career Services.

When does the “Tangerine” come out and where can it be found?
The “Tangerine” comes out every Thursday afternoon and can be found throughout campus in orange wooden boxes.

When does the staff meet to put the paper together?
The staff dedicates Wednesdays for putting the paper together. The staff also holds weekly meetings Monday at 3:30 in room 106 in Hubbard Hall. Remember, you can write and earn credits.

When are stories due?
We assign stories on a weekly basis unless special arrangements are made. We assign stories at the meetings each Monday and expect them to be done the following Monday. If you want to run a brief, editorial or any other piece, please make sure we have it the Monday of the week you want the piece run. Contact Attia Nasar for ad information. Deadlines are important because our staff are students too, and need to get their schoolwork done along with running a paper!

If my story was not run this week does that mean it will not run?
No, sometimes we just run out of room and have to hold stories.

Letters to the Editor Policy:
The “Tangerine” reserves the right to edit, for content or length, any letter sent to the editor. The “Tangerine” can also reject letters conveying a personal attack or negative stereotyping, and those using vulgar words. All letters must meet print deadline of 5 p.m. Monday.

Columns:
Columns reflect the opinion of the staff, faculty or guest writer and not the “Tangerine.” Cartoons and comics represent the opinions of the individual artist and not necessarily the Tangerine.

* Also, editors have the final say and have the right to cut and change staff writers’ work. They will work with you in every way to help make the piece reach its full potential.
