Are you looking for something to do on a Thursday night? If so, then "Film at UC" is perfect for you.

Cultural events have been a tradition at Utica College for years.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Miller, associate professor of communication arts and coordinator of "Film at UC," the film series became a major part of the college in the 1970s, while under the direction of Professor Scott MacDonald. At that time, Miller explained, the series flourished and would continue to for several decades.

In addition, Miller met a local UC Graduate student, Roger Potocki, who said he and some friends established the first student film club at UC in the 1960s. They soon began showing films on campus.

Following Professor MacDonald's retirement, in the spring of 1999, Miller joined the series.

At that point, the future of the film series was unknown. It was then that a small group of young professors had a vision.

Miller, Linda Zee, (presently associate professor of Spanish, coordinator of foreign languages, government and politics, and international studies) John Swanson, (presently associate professor of history) and Mark Metzler, (no longer at UC) "felt that cultural life on campus would suffer if the series were to be discontinued."

In the spring of 1999, Miller and Metzler collaborated the first semester's schedule of films, and in the fall, Miller assumed responsibility for the series.

In Miller's mind, the purpose of the film series is to, "provide local film lovers, both on and off campus, the opportunity to see films that wouldn't otherwise be seen in the area." That includes critically acclaimed foreign language, independent and class films.

All of the films are free and open to the public. Miller explained; should the film series be properly promoted off campus, it would be a "great way to attract people from the community to the college and to contribute to the area's quality of life."
